課程概述

This course offers a comprehensive exploration of the development and diversity of families and genders in Asia. The family has been believed to be a key institution in many Asian societies. However, our knowledge of families in Asia is still shallow and unstructured. This course tries to demonstrate the ways to overcome these limitations and seek for the logics to redefine Asia from a gender perspective. The primary conceptual framework encompasses historical demography, gender studies, and Asian studies.

課程目標
This course aims to provide students with fresh insights into the evolution of Asian families in history and in contemporary world, challenging Eurocentrism in family studies. The course consists of four parts, which are relatively independent from but also related to each other. The first part (Seminars 1-3) provides students the chances to consider how to utilize western concepts in the Asian context. The second part (Seminars 4-6) aims to draw their attention to the diversity within East Asia through learning basic methods and results of historical demography. The third part (Seminars 7-9) introduces the concept of “care regime” which embeds the family in a wider social context and enables students to reconsider Asian familialism. The fourth part (Seminars 10-12) helps students to acquire a completely new view on the global gender history, starting from the diversity of kinship structure and then the advancement of civilizations and modernization.
